06. Scrambled Egg Bend to 89(The Eggs)

Reach banner

In the midst of the rain we drove up to the Weber for a good day of paddling. The upper gate to the put in is still closed for construction on 84 but was easy to get around. The upper dam had a fire and as mentioned in the alert so its fully open. No wood or anything else notible to report. Below the portage quite a bit of water was coming over the divertion spill was and also from under the dam.

First time running this. Plenty of challenges with rocks. Scraped over rocks throughout. Overall a ton of fun and challenging.

Release #4 for 2023, flows were on the med-low side. 450ish on the Gateway-PacifiCorp gauges. We have two swimmers on the first lap. One before the Notch-Ally or upper bend the second on the lower bend. Both boats were recovered after the drops and both kayakers were not injured. Seemed like a good turn out for this release.

Another great release on Eggs. Had around 7 in our group for the first lap. Flows were in the low 400 range. Good for showing a few newer to this section kayakers through. The Boulder between drop 1 and drop 2 has changed. The best line was left of the boulder!

I am loving the new stairs at the put-in, so much easier than the old path. Thank you!!!

A great lap with 5 others today, Flows using the  PacifiCorp gauge were about 715cfs. Which is a good medium flow. The drops were ran by a few of the guys. Drop 1 Center right, Drop 2 Right and drop 3 anywhere. There is a great boof before the power plant, right in the middle of the river.

Video of todays float can be seen here. Eggs 715 cfs

Super good trip, the bend had plenty of line choices, just remember to lean forward or you might get stern squirted. On the scout of the drops it seemed like the rocks had shifted with the higher flows. Looked like there was a line on the left of drop 1, then right on drop 2 and center on drop 3. We put back in between Drops 2 and 3. The wave trains and boofs were amazing at this flow. Here is a link to a video I made https://youtu.be/Zd1fJHplCFs

The second scheduled release of the Scrambled eggs section of the Weber river.

This is a set release from 10:00am to 2:00 pm. For the first run the flow was about 380 cfs and our second run was finished it was closer to 408cfs. The Canal operator on the lower half was taking water but there was plenty to bump though the lower section. Better than carrying the kayak the 1/4 mile to the take out.

Form what I could tell there was close to 40-50 people show up. Not crowded at all. And I did 2 laps. With the right crew and same flows, one could get 4 laps in. I was pleased to see so many people show up and get on this section of water.

This was a full Eggs run, put in to the bridge diversion dam, this is about the minimum flow that I would run this full section. The 498CFS on the USGS gauge at Gateway transfered to about 220cfs on the new Pacific Corp gauge: https://www.pacificorp.com/community/recreation/water-release/weber-river.html

Here is a link to a Youtube video at flows about 310cfs

***At these lower flows, it is very rocky, a dry head run would be best,  and the pin potential is high***

A few more details on the best put-in and take-out. The put-in is a picnic area next to the rest stop on I-84 going east from 89. There is a sign for the rest area, but no sign for the picnic area that is run by Utah Power. After exiting into the rest area, there is a paved road to the right that takes you the short distance to the picnic area, which is at a dam. You can put-in below the dam. Parking is free and made available by Utah Power.

The take-out is also accessible from east bound I-84. It's on the south side just opposite another dam/Utah Power facility. The river, dam, and power plant are between the two lanes of the highway with no public access. But, there is a small gravel lot next to the highway on the south side. To get to the river, you go under the causeway which is next to the lot. Take-out is river left at the dam.

Screw my previous putin. The way to avoid a ticket is to put in at the rest stop. You can alos legally take out on the south side of the river at the canyon mouth.
