Those who attended the Wenatchee River Festival were treated to record flows! Unfortunately they were record low flows with snowpack in the Cascades nearly gone at least a month before usual, but everyone enjoyed a great party to celebrate whitewater resources of the Wenatchee River Valley and the ongoing work of AW in the Pacific Northwest. With the low water Tumwater Canyon, normally a late-season run, was at a prime range of moderate flows. Play spots on the main Wenatchee

Fourth of July weekend marks Independence Day for the South Branch of the Penobscot River in Maine since it is the first schedule release of the Canada Falls (Class V) Section of the Penobscot and the Seboomook Section of the West Branch (Class III). On April 21st, 2005, the Oregon State Attorney General issued an opinion affirming the rights of Oregon citizens to use their public waterways (read full opinion). Specifically the AG found that under current state law the public has the right to use Oregon’s rivers for recreation under two conditions: If a waterway meets the federal test for navigability (i.e. “highways for navigation and commerce”), the state can not interfere with the public use of that waterway for navigation or recreation.

Our history of success is due in large part to committed volunteers and affiliate clubs who invested significant time on river issues in their backyards.  June’s volunteer of the month is a model for this type of commitment, he is actively contacting local paddlers and recruiting members to support AW’s stewardship program. American Whitewater (AW) is pleased to expand its Deerfield River Festival, located in Charlemont Massachusetts July 28th to 31st, to include a River Stewardship Institute.  The River Stewardship Institute is a three day program designed to give everyday river users the necessary skills they will need to ensure the health of their rivers.   River Stewards are river users who take an active interest in protecting our rare whitewater resources. To act as a river steward you must be aware of what

Local paddlers from Bellingham, WA recently organized a fund raiser for AW that included a screening of Eric Link’s latest Twitch film (see AW Bookstore). The event raised $1000 for AW’s Access, Conservation, and Safety programs. With the goal of bringing local paddlers together for a good party and an opportunity to raise some funds, local volunteers Drew Coe, Devin Smith, and Chris Tretwold organized the event at the Pickford Dream Space in Bellingham.
