Cheoah River Access Plan Announced

The US Forest service recently announced their access plan for the fall Cheoah River releases, and possibly the 2006 releases as well.  The plan, described in detail in their press release (below), requires all paddlers to pay a $16 fee and ride a shuttle from Robbinsville.  Until new access areas are built next year, a shuttle is the only option for river access since parking is very limited throughout the Cheoah River Gorge.  Ten dollars of the fee will pay for the actual shuttle

Work on the repair and upgrade of the Cheat River Access at Jenkinsburg begins today. The contractor, Allenwood Construction of Clarksburg, WV, is a subsidiary of J.F. In June 1986 Lewis County Public Utilities District received a license to build and operate the Cowlitz Falls Dam and hydroelectric facility at the confluence of the Cispus and Cowlitz Rivers (FERC 2833). The project destroyed a rare bigwater rapid at the confluence, flooded an additional 2 miles of whitewater, and elimanted the historic take-out for those who enjoyed the Lower Cispus run. Over the past several months Representative Brian Baird and Senator Maria Cantwell worked hard to successfully move the Upper White Salmon Wild and Scenic Rivers Act through Congress. Their legislation, which adds 20 miles of river to the Wild and Scenic River system within the Gifford Pinchot National Forest, was signed into law yesterday by the President. In 1997 the Forest Service released the “Upper White Salmon River Wild and Scenic River Study Report and Final Legislative Environmental Impact Statement”.
