Colorado River Basin Study Projects Imbalances in Water Supply and Demand

Last month, Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar announced the release of the Colorado River Basin Study – a joint effort by the US Bureau of Reclamation and the seven Colorado River Basin states – that projects water supply and demand imbalances throughout the Colorado River Basin and adjacent areas over the next 50 years. Already, water supply falls short of demand, creating what water managers refer to as a system imbalance. With Colorado River flows likely to decline by

AW Opposes Bureau of Reclamation Proposal to Raise Shasta Dam (CA)

The Bureau of Reclamation has had their sight set on raising the height of California's Shasta Dam for years, and the agency is currently soliciting comment on a Draft Feasibility Report for their Shasta Lake Water Resources Investigation. The proposed project preferred by the agency would raise the dam by 18.5 feet, further inundating the McCloud and Upper Sacramento Rivers.    The McCloud and Upper Sacramento Rivers are valued by whitewater enthusiasts throughout California. The McCloud is one of the

Weigh in On Maryland Fracking

Western Maryland is home to the Marcellus Shale formation, now infamous for burgeoning natural gas production accomplished by a controversial technique known as hydaulic fracturing or "fracking."  This region is an important headwaters and freshwater resource for millions of people that depend on water from both the Potomac and Youghiogheny River basins.  These rivers also offer paddlers incredible recreational opportunities, and provide the regional economy with a significant and sustainable recreation-related stimulus. Currently no permits for fracking have been issued

Supporting Mining Clean Up In Opal Creek Headwaters (OR)

On January 15th, American Whitewater submitted comments in support of clean-up activities at two inactive mines in the Willamette National Forest in Oregon. The Ruth and Morning Star Mines, which are located 2 miles east of Jaw Bone Flats in the Opal Creek Scenic Recreation Area, produced lead and zinc ore until they closed in the late 1980's. Today, waste rock and soil from the mines has the potential to contaminate nearby rivers and streams through leaching and mass wasting

Wall Street Journal on the Wild and Scenic Merced

The Wall Street Journal released an article today outlining the current threat to the Wild and Scenic Merced River. While the effort to de-designate part of the Wild and Scenic Merced failed to make it through the last Congress, we have every expectation that a bill will be reintroduced this next year.  The Wall Street Journal article correctly describes this as not just a battle for the Merced but rather a threat to the entire Wild and Scenic Rivers system.

BLM Resource Planning Underway for Western Oregon

The Bureau of Land Management manages more than 2.5 million acres in western Oregon. These lands provide forest products, fish and wildlife habitat, and countless recreation opportunities including whitewater recreation. Unlike national forests, BLM western Oregon public lands are generally not large contiguous blocks. A "checkerboard" of lands make up these federal lands. Currently the BLM is updating their management plan for these lands and the associated rivers and as part of this process they are evaluating rivers for their eligibility

Help Pass Virginia Stream Access Legislation!

The lack of clarity regarding the rights of residents and visitors to paddle Virginia's certain rivers and streams has long been an unnecessary source of conflict.  Virginians are now ready to change that by clarifying that in Virginia people have the widely supported right to float down rivers.  Thanks to this grassroots effort, a new stream access bill, SB 737, has recently been introduced in the state legislature that needs your support.   If you are from Virginia, please look

Cathedral Rock and Horse Heaven Wilderness on the John Day

In 2011, Oregon Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkely reintroduced legislation to create the Cathedral Rock and Horse Heaven Wilderness Areas in Eastern Oregon. If passed, the legislation would protect almost 18,000 acres as wilderness along the John Day River, which flows freely along its entire length. The river provides habitat for diverse species, including wild steelhead and Chinook salmon, and the area is home to stunning basalt cliffs and rolling hills of high desert juniper and sagebrush. It's no

Chattooga Court Hearing Marks Progress for Paddlers

Yesterday a hearing was held in US District Court in South Carolina regarding the Forest Service's illegal bans and severe limits on paddling 21 miles of the Wild and Scenic upper Chattooga River.   The Forest Service banned paddling in 1976, just two years after Congress designated the Chattooga a Wild and Scenic River in large part because of its outstanding value as a paddling destination.  That ban was renewed in 1985 and 2004 with little or no analysis.  Conservation-oriented
