Whitewater rivers represent just 1% of our nation’s river miles and paddlers have long recognized the direct correspondence between rivers suitable for whitewater boating and rivers developed for hydropower. Because of this hydropower relicensing has become a major tool for our stewardship work where we use the opportunity relicensing provides to represent the public interest in restoring water to rivers and improving public access. The fact that American Whitewater participates in more hydro relicensings than any other organization and has

Crooked River (OR) Flow Survey

With the spring season off to a great start in the Pacific Northwest, the Crooked River in Central Oregon has been running for nearly a month attracting boaters from Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. In some years this dam-controlled river doesn’t ever provide boatable flows; more typically it happens on short notice for a few days. American Whitewater is seeking to take advantage of this opportunity to quantify user experiences and evaluate flow preferences for whitewater recreation. We are asking all

Thanks to his generosity and vision a unique partnership developed. A fundraising effort by American Whitewater brought in contributions from individuals and clubs

The rivers in this region are some of the oldest and most biologically rich in the country and are world famous for their whitewater. A host of recent dam relicensings have provided opportunities to restore some of the best regional rivers that were lost to dams in the early 1900’s.
