New Hydro Project for Cuyahoga (OH)

Background The Cuyahoga River played a pivotal role in the birth of the nation’s river conservation movement. The river experienced several fires throughout the 20th century that were fueled by industrial pollution, but it was the 1969 fire that focused national attention on the problems of water pollution affecting our rivers. At a West Virginia Tourism Commission meeting on July 23, Betty Carver, Tourism Commissioner, announced that the State’s Tourism Division will provide gravel for Woods Ferry Road improvements. This assistance from the state helps to secure mid-river access for this Gauley season. American Whitewater requested that the Gauley access issue be placed on the Commission meeting agenda. American Whitewater was notified late last week that two outfitters will discontinue their long-standing policy permitting private paddlers to access West Virginia’s Gauley River at Mason’s Branch, Woods Ferry, and Bucklick.
