EPA Is Asking Which Water Quality Rules To Cut: Tell Them None

The EPA is asking the public which regulations they should repeal, replace, or modify. They were required to ask this question by a recent Executive Order. Here at American Whitewater we have a pretty simple response to which water quality regulations should be cut: "None."  The EPA is responsible for keeping our rivers clean enough to support safe river recreation in large part through working with the states to implement the Clean Water Act. As paddlers know too well, many

Dolores River Update – April 27th

Dolores, CO – Ah, the Dolores River.  Like we do every week, AW is working with water managers to best manage water supplies for the benefit of paddlers, and to restore the Dolores RIver. Each week presents a different set of challenges for the few groups that are working every day to improve the river. Forecasts from weather watchers and water supply models continue to trend down as we move though spring, meaning that best estimates suggest McPHee Reservoir may only

Take Action: Call for a Hearing on Oroville Dam (CA)

Earlier this year, two spillways at Oroville Dam on the Feather River in California became severely compromised, prompting the evacuation of approximately 188,000 people. Officials predicted that a catastrophic failure of one of the spillways was imminent, warning that a wall of water 30 feet tall could rush downstream and wipe out communities in its path. Fortunately, these predictions did not come to pass, but the impact of the failure of these spillways continues to have a significant impact on

Help Keep Invasive Species From Threatening Rivers and Access

Freshwater mussels and algae from other countries have been wreaking havoc ever since they hitched rides to the Great Lakes in the ballast of ocean-going ships. Once established in the Great Lakes they began catching rides to smaller lakes and rivers around the United States, where they have thrown ecosystems out of whack and mucked up infrastructure. In response, some state and federal agencies have began inspecting boats, charging fees, and even limiting access to certain water bodies. Late last

Green Utility Takes Surprising Direction – Upper American River Project (CA)

Recently, the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) made an unexpected move to advocate for policies that would undermine environmental protections in the Clean Water Act and the Federal Power Act.  American Whitewater worked with SMUD and other stakeholders in negotiating a settlement agreement for the Upper American River Hydroelectric Project (UARP) that was signed by all parties in 2007. The final license for the project was issued in 2014 and included whitewater recreation flows to mitigate the impacts of its

Spring Tallulah Releases Postponed (GA)

Southern Company announced today that they are cancelling (eg postponing) the spring recreational releases on the Tallulah Gorge. The cancellation occured because they decided to conduct emergency maintenance work on a spillway gate atop their 103 year old dam. This decision was in turn based on a February 3, 2017 inspection that revealed weaknesses in the gates, though the Company notes failure of the gates is not imminent. They began drawing the reservoir down on March 15th to reduce pressure

Idaho Power announced today that "flows of 10,000 cfs or greater in the Class V whitewater Milner Gorge Reach (Milner Mile) below Milner Dam on the Snake River are likely to be available during April 2017." In most years the hydropower project removes so much water from the Milner Gorge that whitewater paddling is not possible at any time. In high water years like this one though, the power company must release flows into the big, powerful Class V run
