Comments Needed for Dolores River Wild & Scenic Suitability (CO)

Last month, American Whitewater and our conservation partners won a monumental shift in Wild & Scenic River considerations in Colorado. The Colorado Water Conservation Board (CWCB) reversed its long-standing policy of opposing federal Wild & Scenic River protections and voted unanimously to support the US Bureau of Land Management (BLM) draft Resource Management Plan and Wild and Scenic Suitability determination for key segments of the San Miguel and Dolores Rivers. Now the BLM is accepting public comments on their Uncompahgre Field

Developer Ends Effort to Build Hydropower Project on Ernie’s Gorge (WA)

In an important victory for Ernie’s Gorge, we learned earlier today that Black Canyon Hydro LLC was withdrawing its application for the Black Canyon Hydropower Project, FERC P-14110 (notice of withdrawal of application). This project would have dewatered Ernie’s Gorge by putting the North Fork Snoqualmie River in a pipe to generate electricity. The project would have severely impacted native rainbow and cutthroat trout, posed a risk to the City of Snoqualmie’s water supply, and irreversibly harmed a world-class kayak

American Whitewater Wants to Hear Your River Stories

Fall is upon us, which means different things for paddlers in different parts of the US. Maybe it's time to get out on classic dam release rivers like the Gauley, Feather, or Moose, or maybe another great season on the water is winding down as winter approaches. Either way, this could be a great time to sit back and reflect upon adventures, comraderie, incredible places or mishaps that whitewater has led you to.  Here at the AW Journal, we’re excited this

AW Volunteer of the Month Presented by Kokatat – Keith Kishiyama

We would like to recognize lifetime American Whitewater member, Keith Kishiyama, for organizing the ACA sponsored Rock Creek Slalom and Tobin Downriver Race for the 2016 Feather River Festival. Keith’s experience designing the annual Mokelumne River Slalom and organizing the annual Cherry Creek Race made him the perfect candidate to take over the paddling fun at this year’s Feather Fest.   Keith started paddling in 1991 and slalom racing in 1993 on the very same river he first kayaked, the

Plan for Index-Galena Road Repairs on North Fork Sky Open for Comment (WA)

Snohomish County Public Works has published the long-awaited Environmental Assessment for repairs on the Index-Galena Road that historically provided access to the North Fork Skykomish River for whitewater boaters. Many remember this run as one of the classics of the North Cascades until the road providing the primary access was severely damaged in the 2006 flooding. Of the 11 areas along the road that were damaged, 10 have been repaired but a section between milepost 6.4 and 6.9 still needs

This is a strong roster of eligible streams, and we previsoulsy proposed all of them

DEC issued a water quality certification for the Morrisville Hydroelectric Project that reduces opportunities for whitewater kayakers to paddle the Green River compared with natural conditions, and in addition, eliminates all opportunities for scheduled whitewater boating releases that are enjoyed by scores of paddlers from the northeast as well as boaters

This massive development includes a tramway from the Grand Canyon Rim to the confluence of the Little Colorado and Colorado Rivers, a food pavilion, amphitheater and an elevated walkway at the confluence, and at the rim, hotels,

Earlier this month, American Whitewater’s California Stewardship Director Dave Steindorf testified before the State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB) in support of the agency’s water quality certification for the DeSabla/Centerville hydropower project on Butte Creek and the West Branch Feather. The certification calls for decommissioning the Centerville Powerhouse and flume on Butte Creek, which will benefit salmon runs. The 100-year-old Centerville powerhouse has been struggling to stay in operation for well over a decade, and has not created a single
