Dolores River Flow Study (CO)

American Whitewater is to identify the range of preferred boating flows for the main stem and tributaries of the Dolores River below and above McPhee Reservoir in southwestern, Colorado. We have developed this survey so individuals can report their runs and help American Whitewater represent recreational interests in deciding what the future of the Dolores River will look like. Our goal is to utilize information from the survey to help quantify flow preferences for whitewater boating, which will identify the

Act Today For River Access

In 1965, Congress created the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF).  The idea behind LWCF is simple – some of the wealth from offshore drilling should be reinvested in conservation and recreation.  Although the plan was for Congress to reinvest up to $900 million in LWCF every year (of the billions of dollars collected from energy companies drilling in the Gulf of Mexico), this almost never happens.  In light of the BP disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, Congress is

Ausable River Access Update

American Whitewater’s decade-long efforts to secure legal access to New York’s incomparable Class IV/V Ausable Chasm reached a major milestone on June 19, 2010 when New York State Electric and Gas opened the gates at their new river access area at the put in.  Unfortunately, employees of the Ausable Chasm Company, a downstream landowner, sought to intimidate paddlers by calling the State Police, filing three trespassing complaints, and through shouting at paddlers.  Their goal was clearly to discourage responsible and

Chelan Gorge Releases Canceled for July 10 and 11

After consulting with American Whitewater, Chelan PUD has made the decision to cancel the planned whitewater boating opportunities on the Chelan Gorge this weekend (July 10 and 11). Providing this opportunity requires a balancing act between lake level, spill and whitewater boating and unfortunately, at this time the PUD is not able to accommodate all three. The reasons for canceling this weekend’s release are as follows: * The elevation of Lake Chelan is currently 1098.4 feet, approximately 5 inches above

Ausable Chasm Company Resists Public Access

Last weekend marked a major success for the paddling community: federally mandated river access at the power company lands at the put in for the Ausable Chasm.  Unfortunately, in a surprise move the Ausable Chasm Company, which owns the land in the river corridor, had police onsite to write trespassing tickets for several paddlers.  Paddlers reported Ausable Chasm Company representatives threatening paddlers with trespassing charges if they touched the bed or banks of the river or took photographs.   While

Tennessee Bill Proposes Wilderness

Last week Senators Lamar Alexander and Bob Corker from Tennessee introduced the Tennessee Wilderness Act of 2010.  This bill would protect roughly 20,000 acres of some of Tennessee’s wildest lands. Most notably for paddlers the bill would protect the entire Upper Bald River Watershed, a remote and challenging tributary of the Tellico River.  In addition the bill would protect streams in the Joyce Kilmer Slickrock Addition Wilderness Study Area which flow into Claderwood Reservoir just downstream of the Cheoah River.

Help Stop the Spread of Invasive Mussels

The spread of invasive non-native mussels is a major concern for all of us that value rivers.  Increasingly states and managers are setting up fees, wash stations, and regulations to prevent recreationists from spreading mussels. While the most common threat is mussels "hitch-hiking" on the hulls and in bilge water of trailered boats, it is at least possible that they could be transported by whitewater craft that move from river to river. The adult mussels can attach to the bottom

The USFS announced today that they will further delay reaching a new decision on how to manage recreation on the Upper Chattooga River (NC/SC/GA).  A 2009 decision was withdrawn shortly after its release, and the agency stated a new decision would be released early in the spring of 2010.  The decision remains in limbo, the river remains banned to paddling, and the ban is currently being challenged in federal court.
