AW-LVM Podcast: Chattooga River (NC, SC, GA)

In this entry, LVM’s John Grace sits down with AW’s Kevin Colburn and Jeff Paine to talk about the status of paddling the headwaters of the Chattooga River – and why it’s so important to paddlers even if they live nowhere near it. This was recorded in mid-December 2009 so doesn’t touch on the most recent developments, but it gives a great, quick overview on the issue.     Chattooga Access Update from Lunch Video Magazine on Vimeo.

Judge Grants Permission for Dillsboro Dam Removal (NC)

Yesterday, Superior Court Judge Zoro J. Guice Jr. rejected all remaining challenges made by Jackson County (NC) against Duke Energy’s efforts to remove Dillsboro Dam on the Tuckasegee River.  It is extremely likely that the ruling is the final decision on the fate of Dillsboro Dam, as Duke was already poised to begin the removal of the dam early this year based on their orders from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC).  A Duke representative indicated earlier today in the

Vermillion River Access Issue Continues (IL)

The Vermillion River in northern Illinois offers a regionally rare whitewater treat of sufficient quality to support commercial rafting.  Last year, the owner of the Buzzi Unicem cement plant near the river made a bold, and thus far successful attempt to close the river to paddling.  It is unclear exactly why the corporation would try to close the popular river, but some hypothesized that it may be an attempt to trade public stream access permission for rights to quarry 30

Colorado Bill Proposes Right of River Navigation

The Colorado River Outfitters Association is supporting new legislation that protects Colorado’s tourism industry by clarifying the rights of commercial guides to operate on Colorado’s historically run rivers. Colorado State Representative Kathleen Curry has indicated her willingness to carry the River Jobs Protection Act in the Second Regular Session of the Colorado General Assembly. American Whitewater has been involved in drafting and review of the bill, and will release a official statement later this month. The 2010 River Rafting Job

AW Grows it’s Dolores River Campaign (CO)

Over the past 2 years, American Whitewater has received several requests for assistance from our affiliate clubs, volunteers, and partner organizations in the Dolores River basin. Given the current staffing and success of our stewardship program, we are now in a position to meet this need.  We have developed a strategy to empower key volunteers with the tools, resources, and leadership needed to build collaborative partnerships and engage in existing efforts to address multiple aspects of river health, including minimum

USFS Withdraws Chattooga Decisions and Analyses

Yesterday, before leaving for the Holidays, US Forest Service officials “voluntarily withdrew” their decisions and analysis regarding their illegal ban on paddling the Wild and Scenic Upper Chattooga River. The decisions and analysis were under intense scrutiny in the administrative appeals process, and are currently being challenged in Federal Court. The step is just the most recent in 14 years of avoidance tactics employed by local decision-makers in the agency. The river remains banned to boating. “Effective immediately, the three

Mokelumne River (CA) – Protection for the Future – Protection for the Now

On October 13, 2009 East Bay Municipal Utility District’s (EMUD) Board Members voted to approve their Waste Supply Management Program (WSMP) 2040. Proposals to enlarge Pardee Reservoir, included in this plan, remain a threat to our whitewater interests on the Molkelumne River. American Whitewater encourages members to support National Wild & Scenic River designation as the best option to permanently fend off agencies, like EBMUD, who threaten to flood the last free flowing sections of the Mokelumne. But keep in

Ship Creek (AK) Access Issue

Ship Creek Canyon has been known for several years as a great Alaskan whitewater run just outside downtown Anchorage. The trail to the creek is on Forest Service land but the creek itself flows through the military’s Fort Richardson light-tactical training area, that has been open to some forms of permitted recreation, but not watercraft. For several years there was no enforcement and just the occasional warning but it appears the base is taking things more seriously and unfortunately local

Jared Hogle Named AW Volunteer of the Month Presented by Kokatat

American Whitewater is pleased to recognize Jared Hogle as our Volunteer of the Month for December, 2009.  Jared was and remains the leading local advocate for access to New York’s Ausable Chasm and other regional rivers.  Over the past few years, some local and corporate interests decided that the best way to manage paddling through the Ausable Chasm is with a locked gate.  Jared provided an authentic local voice in favor of providing public access to the beautiful and unique

Support New Flows For the McCloud River

American Whitewater has been working for three years to get improved flows on the McCloud River, quite possibly the best class III/ IV wilderness run in California. In order for this to become a reality we need your support!  We need to get letters off to the resource agencies ASAP to show that whitewater boaters are interested in the McCloud.   The agencies have proposed a flow schedule that we think is a huge improvement over the existing flows.  This flow

Time to Write Your Intro to Whitewater Story

It’s hard to imagine, but in less than a month (December 21) it’ll be the submission deadline for our March/April edition of American Whitewater. For this issue, we’re looking for stories about what it means to be new to whitewater rivers. If you’ve been paddling for many years, consider looking back to your first season in a boat and reminiscing about the good old days. For those who are currently novices, what do you like about the sport? Why do

Help Remove a Dam on Twelvemile Creek (SC)

The state of South Carolina is considering funding the removal of the third of three dams on Twelvemile Creek.  The other two dams are already shceduled for removal.  The removal of all three dams would restore a lost whitewater river that is currently buried under reservoirs.  As part of their decision-making process the SC Department of Natural Resources has posted an online survey which asks the public to prioritize the allocation of funding across a variety of reservoir-oriented projects, or

Sullivan Creek Dam Removal Images Produced

Earlier this year Cody Erhart, a recent landscape architecture program graduate, produced images for American Whitewater depicting what Sullivan Creek (WA) might look like following the removal of Millpond Dam. The dam is roughly 100 years old, and has not generated power for over 50 years.  Its removal is part of an agreement in principle signed by American Whitewater, the US Forest Service, the dam owner and several other stakeholders.  The images were released at an open meeting in October
