General Overview
A local Kiwanis Club sponsors a race each spring (2024 was the 50th year), starting at Koepp Park in Pewaukee, ending at the Frame Park Rotary Building. If there is not adequate flow naturally occuring from other branches, reportedly they get releases from Pewaukee Lake via the dam. This event is a fundraiser with an entry fee ($32 or $40 per boat, conflicting info online for 2026). Reportedly, awards include one for the slowest boat to finish ... and claims are that 'Spotters will be present at the trickiest locations to assist if you tip over but will not actively prevent capsizing.' Info at: Kiwanis River Run
This run may be paired with (or either may be 'substituted for' the other) the listed run on the Fox River in Waukesha, which has it's put-in just downstream of the listed take-out for this reach.
River Features
Put In: HC Koepp Village Park
Some sources list using parking lots behind business on Wisconsin Avenue. These lots all have multiple signs indicating 'CUSTOMER PARKING ONLY', 'UNAUTHORIZED VEHICLES WILL BE TICKETED/TOWED AT OWNERS EXPENSE'.
Why risk that, when almost immediately downstream, access is readily available at HC Koepp Village Park.
HOWEVER ... have a look at the bridge just downstream to check clearance! At high flows, you cannot get under it, and will have to opt for another put-in.
Drainage area at this point is 34.2 square miles. At the mouth (at the confluence with the Fox River), drainage has increased to 38.2 square miles.
Alternate put-in: E Wisconsin Avenue (Under Hwy.16)
To avoid problems with the above mentioned low bridge, put-in may be possible immediately under State Highway 16, from Wisconsin Avenue. While there seem to be 'pull off' areas along the westbound lane, this area is all marked no parking. The eastbound lane has a marked parking lane alongside.
E.Wisconsin Avenue Bridge
After passing under Wisconsin Avenue, a string of houses along the right bank soon give way to lowland/swampy area that will border the river most of the way to the passing under the Interstate.
Interstate 94 Tunnel
A long tunnel passes under the interstate. At high water, this may prove impassable, which would be beyond awkward, necessitating portaging over the freeway!
Nearly the only way to check clearance would be to be eastbound on the freeway, take Exit 294 (North 164, South CTH.J), and IMMEDIATELY upon taking the exit, pull to the side of the ramp to park and walk down to the river/tunnel for a look.
The remainder of the run will have substantially different feel (or sound). Much of the time you will be within earshot of the freeway, and will be passing backyards and businesses until reaching the confluence with Fox River.
Pewaukee Road bridge
It parking were available at this location, one could cut out nearly 4.75 miles of flatwater paddling, and focus on the most exciting part of the run. Unfortunately, there is no roadside parking here.
The only option would be to check with WVRC (Wisconsin Veterinary Referral Center) to request permission to park in their lot and access the river from there.
Busse Road
Swift currents in a couple tight bends in the river precede Busse Road.
USGS sampling site
USGS lists a sampling site at Busse Road listing drainage area of 37.8 square miles.
This is 0.3 times the active gauge for the Fox in Waukesha. However, flow in Pewaukee River is regulated by the dam on Pewaukee Lake, so expect correlation to be inaccurate.
Steinhafels Drive
The driveway into the Steinhafels Furniture Superstore.
Redford Boulevard (CTH.F)
A fair-sized cement box/culvert for Redford Boulevard (CTH.F) should have good clearance at all reasonable flows.
Defunct Railroad Bridge
Just downstream of CTH.F/Redford Boulevard, a defunct railroad bridge is likely to be impassible when flows are anywhere above moderate for this stretch. HIGHLY RECOMMEND SCOUTING THIS LOCATION BEFORE PUTTING ON. If this railroad bridge is impassable, it is recommended to just leave your 'drop' vehicle(s) at this point, to just take out here and walk to your vehicle(s). Immediately downstream of this bridge lies the confluence with the Fox River. In order to distinguish it from the Fox River which flows into and out of Lake Winnebago and down to Green Bay, many folks refer to this as the 'Illinois Fox' (since it flows into Illinois, eventually to its confluence with the Illinois River). The Kiwanis Club race (held each May, for 50 years as of 2024) continues downstream on the Fox to the Frame Park Rotary Building.
Alternate Take-out: Wonderland Tap
Check with the proprietor to get permission to park in their lot and use this location for take-out.
(Wouldn't hurt to patronize them for some food and/or beverage if you use their lot for access.)
TAKE-OUT: Frame Park Rotary Building
Docks exist at this location for convenient take-out.
Take-out: Frame Park Rotary Building
The annual Kiwanis race continues down to Frame Park to take out at the boat landing (docks) at this location. From the confluence to here will be dead flat water (backed up by the dam \~0.4 mile downstream. This, in combination with the aforementioned railroad bridge (which is often impassable), it is recommended to just take out before that bridge and the confluence.
