The Teva Ottawa River Rodeo hosted by Equinox Adventures and sanctioned by American Whitewater was the largest competitive event to date. Over 120 competitors competed in the hole riding competition. The large competitive field and big bouncy holes provided spectators and competitors alike with some incredible competition; including an intense battle between Teva’s Pat Keller and Perception’s Dustin Urban during the Junior Expert Finals. The Gauley season usually consists of five 4 day (Fri-Sat-Sun-Mon) weekends and one two-day weekend. American Whitewater Volunteers are continuing to try to reopen Texas’ Guadalupe River. The river was closed by Judge Scheel in July by an emergency order following record flooding. Now that the flood waters have receded, American Whitewater’s volunteers are advocating for a restoration of the public’s right to float on the Guadalupe. As mitigation for impacts on the Skagit River resulting from hydropower dams, Seattle City Light has provided funds for new and improved recreational access within the Skagit River drainage. One of the sites of primary interest to paddlers was opened this summer (July 2002) on the Sauk River just downstream of the Suiattle River confluence, on the downstream river left side of the Highway 530 bridge. AW’s Grand Canyon Survey Analysis American Whitewater collected responses to our non-scientific online survey between July 9 and August 8, 2002 at www.AmericanWhitewater.org.
